Elite Athlete - Who Should Take
Research has shown that strenuous aerobic exercise is associated with oxidative stress and tissue damage in the body. Those at risk include:
• Anyone who runs over 30 miles per week.
• Anyone who exercise above the threshold of 150 aerobic points per week.
• Anyone who trains at 80% of maximum heart rate at least 5 hours per week.
The body’s need for oxygen during exercise seems to produce free radicals, which can result in DNA damage, cancer, direct damage to muscle tissue, and make the cells more susceptible to aging (Antioxidant Revolution, Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, 1992). Acute strenuous exercise and chronic strenuous exercise training increase the consumption of various antioxidants; therefore it is conceivable that dietary supplementation of specific antioxidants would be beneficial (Free Radical Biological Medicine 18, 1995).
Cooper Complete Elite Athlete multivitamin and mineral supplement caters to the needs of ultra athletes by providing high levels of antioxidant vitamins: 2,000 mg of vitamin C, 1,200 mg of vitamin E and 200 mcg of selenium to prevent free radical damage that may result from endurance exercise. Marathon runners, triathletes, and anyone who exercises over five hours per week at 80% of the maximal heart rate or higher (as defined: 220-age x 0.8) should make vitamin supplementation a part of their daily regimen.
