What It Is

Starting at approximately age 30, bones start slowly losing calcium.  Designed to be taken in conjunction with a multivitamin, our Cooper Complete® Calcium Citrate Dietary Supplement is the first step to healthy bones.

How to Use:

As a dietary supplement, adults take two (2) tablets daily or as directed by your physician or health care professional. 120 tablets per bottle. Each bottle contains 60 servings.

How It Helps

For strong bones, proper levels of calcium, along with weight-bearing exercise, are a must. A calcium citrate supplement is a great solution when a diet doesn’t provide optimal calcium levels. In addition, research indicates long-term, daily calcium intake is required for optimal bone health.

While Cooper Clinic recommends calcium consumption through food, it is often difficult to consistently reach this optimal level. When diet alone is not enough, augment with Cooper Complete® Calcium Citrate supplements. Each tablet provides 250 mg calcium citrate. Based on your age, Cooper Clinic recommends the following daily calcium intake:

  • Women 19-50 years: 1,000 mg
  • Women 51 and older: 1,200 mg
  • Men 19-70 years: 1,000 mg
  • Men 71+ years: 1,200 mg

As part of a healthy diet, strive to include two to four servings of low-fat and non-fat dairy per day through food sources. In addition to dairy, calcium is found in soybeans, enriched grains, and dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, turnips, and collard greens. There are also many calcium-fortified foods in grocery stores – everything from orange juice to English muffins.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body. The blood calcium level may be normal even in individuals who do not get enough calcium in the diet. And to provide adequate calcium for the muscles and heart, the body will utilize calcium from the bone, reducing bone density. Therefore, it is essential to discuss your calcium needs with your physician to ensure you consume (through food, fortified foods, and supplements) the optimal levels of calcium needed.

Cooper Complete Calcium Citrate supplement is designed to be taken in conjunction with one of the Cooper Complete multivitamins, which already includes desirable levels of magnesium and vitamin D. For optimal absorption, Calcium Citrate supplements should be taken first thing in the morning and last thing at night, so they do not compete with calcium that has been consumed through diet.

As a dietary supplement, adults take two (2) tablets daily or as directed by their physician or health care professional. 120 tablets per bottle. Vanilla-flavored easy swallow coating.

Reviews of Calcium Citrate Supplement 500 mg

  1. Cooper Complete Calcium citrate is very easy to digest and absorb. A better form for seniors, and those with stomach issues. The caplets are easy to swallow and pair well with the Cooper Complete Basic One or the Original Multi. We take it in the evening to help with sleep. And who doesn’t want that? We highly recommend.

18 Questions
Ask a Question
Q:

What are 5 benefits of calcium?

A:

Your body doesn’t just need calcium to build and maintain strong bones; it also plays a role in blood clotting, assisting the mucles to expand and contract, regulates normal heart rhythms and nerve functions.

Q:

What’s the best calcium supplement for seniors?

A:

As we age, we often have less stomach acid; therefore, calcium citrate is recommended for people over 50.  Calcium carbonate requires stomach acid for absorption.

Q:

Why isn’t calcium in Cooper Complete multivitamins?

A:

Cooper Clinic physicians prefer that calcium be consumed through food sources, and individual diets vary greatly. In addition, calcium requirements are dependent upon both gender and age. Because of these variables, Cooper Complete multivitamins do not contain calcium.

Q:

What does calcium do for the body?

A:

While 99% of calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, the remaining 1% is essential for your heart, nerves and muscles to function normally.

Q:

Can lack of calcium cause hair loss?

A:

Yes, a prolonged calcium deficiency can cause hair loss as well as dry skin and brittle nails.

Q:

Does calcium increase cholesterol?

A:

There is no indication that calcium increases cholesterol. In fact, some studies have shown that it may help lower cholesterol levels.

Q:

When should calcium supplements be taken—in the morning or at night?

A:

Calcium citrate, including Cooper Complete Calcium Citrate, may be taken with or without food, so many find it easiest to take at bedtime or before breakfast. Since your body cannot absorb more than 500 mg at a time, whether from food or a supplement, taking on an empty stomach ensures optimal absorption.  Calcium carbonate needs to be taken with food to aid in absorption, so it cannot be taken on an empty stomach.

Calcium supplements can interact with some prescription medications, such as blood pressure medications, synthetic thyroid hormones and even bisphophonates used to treat osteoporosis. It also affects the absorption of iron, zinc and magnesium.

Q:

Can you take vitamin D and calcium together?

A:

Yes. Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium.

Q:

What happens if calcium is too low?

A:

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020–2025 report that 30% of adult men and 60% of adult women don’t consume enough calcium. Not getting enough calcium can lead to low bone mass, a risk for osteoporosis.

Q:

What is the difference between calcium citrate that you recommend and the calcium carbonate that I have been taking?

A:

Calcium citrate is more easily absorbed than calcium carbonate. Your body doesn’t need stomach acid to absorb calcium citrate so it is a better choice for those with digestive issues or who take heartburn medications. Calcium citrate may also be taken on an empty stomach.

Q:

How big are the calcium citrate pills?

A:

There is an image on the Calcium Citrate product page showing the tablets next to a quarter for size reference. If you go to the bottle image of Calcium on the product page and scroll right you will see the picture.

Q:

Should Calcium Citrate supplements be taken with or without food?

A:

Calcium citrate does not require stomach acid for absorption, so it can be taken with or without food. Because this form of calcium does not require stomach acid for absorption, calcium citrate supplements are recommended for people who regularly take antacids.

Q:

Can I take this product if I am also taking Coumadin or Warfarin?

A:

If you take Coumadin or Warfarin, we recommend consulting your doctor before adding Calcium Citrate Supplement or other supplements to your diet.

Q:

How can I tell how much calcium is in a food or beverage?

A:

To determine the amount of calcium in food products, if you’re reading food labels that say 20 percent calcium, replace the percent sign with a zero to get the total milligrams. So, for example, 20 percent would be the same as 200 milligrams of calcium.

Q:

What are calcium-rich foods?

A:

Calcium-rich foods include fortified tofu, canned salmon and dairy products. Calcium-fortified juices, cereals and bread are also available. Broccoli, spinach, kale and brussels sprouts also contain calcium, but at lower levels.

If you drink milk to get your calcium, keep in mind that one cup (eight ounces) typically has about 300 mg of calcium. So, you’ll need to drink between three and four cups daily to meet the calcium requirements. Some soy, rice, and almond milk are fortified with calcium, but amounts vary widely, so check the labels when evaluating different brands.

Q:

Why should I take calcium?

A:

Research indicates that long-term, daily calcium intake is required to promote bone health best. Bone health doesn’t seem to differ based on how someone consumes calcium — whether by eating calcium-rich foods or taking different types of calcium supplements.

Q:

Is Cooper Complete Calcium Citrate vegan?

A:

Yes, Cooper Complete Calcium Citrate is vegan.

Q:

For best absorption, when should I take Calcium Citrate Supplement?

A:

Our body can absorb approximately 500 mg of calcium at a time. If you need to take more than 500 mg calcium per day, we suggest splitting the pills up across the day. While calcium citrate can be safely taken with food, we recommend taking calcium citrate supplements on an empty stomach or at a meal where there’s little (if any) calcium in the meal.
