Frequently Asked Questions:

How does Prostate Health work?
In Germany, Austria, Italy and other European countries, saw palmetto is an accepted medical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). One review of 18 trials (including more than 2,900 men and lasting up to 48 weeks) concluded that saw palmetto improves urinary symptoms in men with BPH as well as the prescription medication finasteride (Proscar) does—but with fewer side effects, such as reduced sexual functioning. (Journal of the American Medical Association, 1998; 280: 1604-1609.)

Will Prostate Health protect me from prostate cancer?
No. Prostate Health is designed to help lesson the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Does Prostate Health interact with any other medications?
You should not take Prostate Health if you are taking blood thinners (such as Coumadin or warfarin) as saw palmetto may increase bleeding. (Journal of Internal Medicine, 2001; 250: 167-169.)

Can I discontinue prostate prescription medications if I am taking Prostate Health?
No. You should talk with your urologist before taking Prostate Health to discuss potential interactions with your prescription medications.

How long will it take before I experience improvements in symptoms?
Prostate Health reduces the symptoms of BPH for about 50 to 65 percent of consumers. Take two softgels daily of Prostate Health for four to six weeks to see if the product lessens your symptoms of BPH. If BPH symptoms haven’t improved after two months, discontinue using the product.

What is saw palmetto?
Saw palmetto is an herb extracted from the dark purple berries of the American saw palmetto tree. In the 1960s, French researchers found that concentrating the oils of saw palmetto maximized the herb’s effectiveness. Researchers don’t know exactly how the herb affects the prostate, but it’s thought to work similar to the medication finasteride (Proscar) by preventing testosterone from breaking down into another form of the hormone associated with prostate tissue growth. (Current Therapeutic Research, 1994; 55: 776,785. The Journal of Urology, 2000; 163:1451,1456)

What is selenium and why do I need it?
Selenium is a trace mineral. It is a structural element of the enzyme that protects glutathione, which serves as part of the body's internal defense against free radical damage. Selenium works hand in hand with vitamins C, E, and beta carotene as an antioxidant defense. Selenium supplementation was shown to reduce the frequency of lung, colon, rectal and prostate cancer in older men followed for 6.4 years (Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 276, No.24: Dec. 25, 1996).

Why is lycopene included in Prostate Health?
Lycopene helps support a healthy prostate. It is a carotenoid and a strong antioxidant that gives tomatoes, red grapefruit and watermelon their red color. Research shows that eating tomato sauce or mashed tomatoes cooked with a little olive oil may help reduce your risk of prostate cancer. (Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 2002; Vol. 94, No. 5, 391-398)
