Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is Cooper Complete Dermatologic Health beneficial for the skin?
Skin is the largest organ of the human body. Along with our eyes, it is the only organ constantly exposed to the environment. Skin is "assaulted" by light (especially ultraviolet and visible wavelengths) and environmental pollutants. Such exposure can create cell-damaging free radicals within skin.

Vitamin A (as natural beta carotene with mixed carotenoids) and Zinc are both effective in improving one's complexion by reducing oil production and acne lesions. Copper, an essential part of many important enzyme reactions, can increase elastin production and thus help to reduce the appearance of lax skin, stretch marks and wrinkles and can help with skin conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo. Biotin (a member of the B Complex) is a nutrient that forms the basis of all skin, hair, and nail cells and is thus crucial in maintaining healthy skin, strong nails, and hair growth.

Vitamins C and E are potent anti-oxidants that counter the effects of sun exposure by scavenging free radicals. When Vitamins A and E are taken together, studies have shown a significant reduction in Basal Cell Carcinoma, a common skin cancer that is sun induced. Selenium protects that skin from sun damage and can also reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Polypodium Leucotomas (rhizome and root) comes from a tropical fern plant that grows in South and Central America. Polypodium Leucotomas is most popularly marketed as Heiliocare. Native American use the plant extract to treat inflammatory disorders and skin disease. Research shows that this antioxidant provides protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and other sources and can lower one's risk of developing skin cancer. Polypodium leucotomas has also been studied for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin damage caused by the sun.

Two particular studies suggest that the oral supplementation of lutein may protect the skin from the damage induced by UVB radiation by inhibiting DNA damage and diminishing its inflammatory effects. Furthermore, the data indicate that taking lutein may have the potential to prevent UVB-induced skin cancer, at least in the animal model evaluated.

Data from two other studies demonstrate that dietary supplementation with lutein may inhibit the cutaneous inflammatory response and the local immunosuppressive response commonly seen following exposure to ultraviolet light.

Research has also suggested erythema (redness) resulting from UV radiation was significantly reduced after eight weeks of supplementation with a carotenoid mixture that included lutein.

What is lutein?
Lutein is an antioxidant found in green vegetables such as spinach, kale and collard greens. In our bodies, lutein is located within the eyes (including the macula, lens and retina), skin, blood serum and other tissues. While heavily concentrated in the center of the retina, in the region of maximum visual sensitivity known as the macula, lutein seems to behave as a natural sunshade for the eye.

Lutein filters high-energy blue light that can damage skin cells. Lutein is also thought to protect the skin from destructive oxidation reactions by quenching free radicals.

Why is Dermatologic Health beneficial for Healthy Hair?
Horsetail Extract (stems) is often found in cosmetics and shampoos. A living fossil, horsetail extract contains high levels of the element silicon. A study has shown that horsetail extract was effective in improving hair growth. Dermatologic Health also contains Biotin and Zinc, to promote healthy hair.

Why is Dermatologic Health beneficial for Healthy Nails?
Brittle fingernails are a common condition for about 20 percent of us. More women than men develop brittle nails. While nail brittleness may be caused by an underlying condition, in some cases brittle nails may be due to repeated washing and drying of hands. Biotin and Horsetail Extract are also often used to improve brittle nails.
